Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome Brachycephalic airway syndrome encompasses a specific set of upper respiratory abnormalities found in brachycephalic dogs. Stenotic nares denote abnormally narrowed or small nostrils, posing a challenge for these dogs to breathe through their noses. Dogs with an elongated soft palate, the soft part of the roof of the mouth, suffer from a lengthened palate that obstructs the entrance to the trachea, leading to difficulties in air movement.

Surgical intervention is the preferred treatment when these anatomical abnormalities hinder a dog's breathing. Stenotic nares can be rectified through surgery, which involves removing tissue from the nostrils to improve airflow. In the case of an elongated soft palate, surgical procedures can shorten it to a more typical length, relieving breathing difficulties.
