At Woodland Springs Veterinary Hospital, we are developing future leaders in the next generation of veterinary doctors! Woodland Springs Veterinary Hospital is a four-doctor, AAHA-accredited, small animal practice located in the beautiful Keller area of Fort Worth. We provide a supportive team environment committed to excellent medicine, patient care, and customer service. The externship program is structured to guide you in acquiring good industry practice standards that help build your confidence. An externship experience will allow students to understand the practice’s day-to-day operations and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Our externship enables students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical, communication, and leadership skills they acquired during their clinical preparation. Externs work alongside our veterinary team and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care.
Description
- Our externship program is two weeks in length during the year, Monday through Friday, following the supervising DVM scheduled hours.
- Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub into surgery, assist in dentistry services and the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, build your client communication skills, polish your technical skills, and produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) experiencing the typical caseload of small animal practice.
- In addition to practicing their clinical and leadership skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
- Long-term mentorship is available for students and new graduates interested in a developmental partnership. We follow the AAHA mentorship guidelines to foster personal and professional growth.

A day in the life of a veterinary technician / LVT
As a Licensed Veterinary Technician, you are vital to our practice. Each day, you arrive at work eager to render loving animal care. When patients arrive, you use your excellent customer service skills to greet them and help them feel at ease in our stress-free environment. Next, you obtain patient histories and prepare each animal for a veterinary exam. Using your training and expertise as a vet tech, you follow up with whatever procedures the vet requests, such as collecting specimens, performing IV catheterization, doing phlebotomy work, and administering a variety of medications.
As part of your duties, you take radiographs to correctly diagnose a problem. You also help in surgery by prepping the patient, monitoring the anesthetic, and serving as a surgical and dentistry assistant. Conscientious about precision, you chart all that takes place and ensure that each medication is dispensed accurately and as prescribed. Whenever you get the chance, you educate our clients and help them understand how to best support their pets in their health and wellbeing. - Students will work closely with the supervising technicians and veterinary assistants to develop proper techniques in restraint, basic services, and every day clinic tasks such as receiving inventory, hospital upkeep, and boarding care. In addition to practicing their clinical and leadership skills, student interns will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the veterinary team, other support staff, and clients.
- Employment may be available for students interested in a developmental partnership. We follow the AAHA mentorship guidelines to foster personal and professional growth.
